I have iMac mid 2010 (got it back then for iOS developmer) with 8GB of ram 21'5inch and I can run Dota 2 at maximum settings and maximum resolution with 20-22 frames per second (vsync), never tried without vsync - however I don't play Dota 2 on my iMac, so I have no idea how much the frame rate drops with lots of particle effects and polygons in team fights.

During the game, work on your strategy to win, including by deciding how many heroes to put in each lane and working with your team's creeps. Yes you can play against bots, and that's actually what should happen the first 20 or so games you play so you can get a feel for it. The fun part(imo) is the online play though.
